[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hámawants, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hámawants. Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬨𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬧𐬙 (amauuaṇt). Synchronically अम (ama, “impetuosity, violence”) + -वत् (-vat).
