Etymology

[edit]

Traditionally explained as अनु- (anu-, after) +‎ स्तुभ् (stubh, to praise; to utter a joyful sound, root), literally following in praise, referring to the way it follows the three-pāda (8-syllable unit) गायत्री (gāyatrī) with its four pādas.
