From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Haȷ́ínam ~ *Hiȷ́áynam (leather, animal skin, hide), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂e(y)ǵ-í-no-m (goat skin), from *h₂e(y)ǵ- (goat). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬰𐬌𐬥𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬧𐬙 (azinauuaṇt, wearing a skin), 𐬍𐬰𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬀 (īzaēna, leathern), Khotanese [script needed] (häysä, skin), [script needed] (ījīnai), Yidgha [script needed] (ize, skin bag), Baluchi [script needed] (hiz, leather churn), Ossetian хызын / хизин (xyzyn, bag), Lithuanian oženà (goat skin), Proto-Slavic *azьno (goat skin).
