Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Iranian *Haȷ́ínam ~ *Hiȷ́áynam (“leather, animal skin, hide”), from Proto-Indo-European *h₂e(y)ǵ-í-no-m (“goat skin”), from *h₂e(y)ǵ- (“goat”). Cognate with Avestan 𐬀𐬰𐬌𐬥𐬀𐬎𐬎𐬀𐬧𐬙 (azinauuaṇt, “wearing a skin”), 𐬍𐬰𐬀𐬉𐬥𐬀 (īzaēna, “leathern”), Khotanese [script needed] (häysä, “skin”), [script needed] (ījīnai), Yidgha [script needed] (ize, “skin bag”), Baluchi [script needed] (hiz, “leather churn”), Ossetian хызын / хизин (xyzyn, “bag”), Lithuanian oženà (“goat skin”), Proto-Slavic *azьno (“goat skin”).
