Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Indo-Aryan *Hángʰriš, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hángʰriš from Proto-Indo-European *h₃óngʰlis, metathetical variant of *h₃nógʰl-is ~ *h₃n̥gʰl-éys, derived from the l-stem noun *h₃nógʰl̥, *h₃óngʰl̥ (“nail, claw”) (compare Proto-Iranian *Hnágr̥ (“nail”), Latin ungula (“hoof, claw”), and Proto-Germanic *naglaz (“nail”), based on the root *h₃negʰ-, whence also नख (nakhá-). For the semantic development, compare Proto-Slavic *nogà (“foot, leg”) from the same root.
