Inherited from Sanskrit प्रस्थान (prasthāna, “setting out, departure; walking, journey; source, cause”). Cognate to Sinhalese පටන් (paṭan, “to begin from, since”). Doublet of ފަށަނީ (faṣanī) and ފަށައިގެން (faṣaigen̊)
