Etymology

[edit]

From earlier 𑤀𑤛𑤵𑤮𑤳 (ateḷu), perhaps from Prakrit *𑀲𑀁𑀢𑀻𑀞 (*saṃtīṭha), *𑀲𑀁𑀢𑀺𑀝𑁆𑀞 (*saṃtiṭṭha), from Sanskrit *संतीर्थ (saṃtīrtha, level ford), from सम्- (sam-) +‎ तीर्थ (tīrtha).[1] The alternative popular etymology, from Persian آب‌تل (âb-tal, water-hillock), is now considered untenable.
