ܫܡܟܐ

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Assyrian Neo-Aramaic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

Possibly from Akkadian, if the Akkadian word is not an Aramaic borrowing. Also attested in Classical Syriac ܫܡܟܐ (šemkā, body odor), ܫܘܡܟܐ (šumkā, onion), and ܫܡܟܘܬܐ (smell of a cave). Possibly originally referring to a bulbous plant, reflected in this word usually being said as ܪܝܼܚܵܐ ܕܫܸܡܟ݂ܵܐrīḥā dšimḵāsmell of šimxā.
