- what is your name? respectful way to ask for one’s name, used towards those of equal or higher status
Usage notes
[edit]- This term is the respectful way to ask for one’s name. The outright ܡܵܐ ܫܸܡܘܼܟ݂؟ ― mā šimūḵ? ― What’s your name? is only said to those of lower status (younger people), and is disrespectful if said to those of equal or higher status.
- The typical response includes ܒܫܲܝܢܵܐ ܓܵܘܘܼܟ݂ (bšaynā gāwūḵ, literally “Peace to you”)
