Etymology

Shortening of שומשומא (šumššumā), from Akkadian 𒊭𒈦𒌑𒈬 (šamaššammū, “oil plant”), compound of 𒉌𒄑 (šaman, “oil”) and 𒌑 (šammum, “plant”). Compare Arabic سِمْسِم (simsim) and Hebrew שֻׁמְשֹׁם (šumšōm).
