Shortening of שומשומא (šumššumā), from Akkadian 𒊭𒈦𒌑𒈬 (šamaššammū, oil plant), compound of 𒉌𒄑 (šaman, oil) and 𒌑 (šammum, plant). Compare Arabic سِمْسِم (simsim) and Hebrew שֻׁמְשֹׁם (šumšōm).
