Derived from the verb ܫܵܠܹܦ (šālēp, “to remove, extract”); compare Hebrew שֹׁ֥לֵֽף (shólef, “knife, sword”) and borrowed into Northern Kurdish şilf (“blade, (sharp) edge”) (a Semitic borrowing).
