Etymology

From the root ܦ-ܪ-ܕ (p-r-d) related to dispersing. Compare Akkadian 𒉿𒊑𒅔𒁺 (pirindu, vegetable foodstuff), Arabic فَرْدَة (farda) and بَذْرَة (baḏra), and Hebrew פְּרֵדָה (pərēḏâ).
