Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac ܦܪܕܝܣܩܐ, with the meaning changed, from Ancient Greek πυργίσκος (purgískos, burial-vault; cupboard, cabinet), diminutive of πῠ́ργος (púrgos, tower); possible influence by or allusion to ܦܲܪܕܲܝܣܵܐ (pardaysā, paradise).
