[edit]Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Latin Palaestīna (“Roman province of Palestine”), from Ancient Greek Παλαιστίνη (Palaistínē, “Philistia and the surrounding region”), from Hebrew פְּלֶשֶׁת (p'léshet, “Philistia”); therefore doublet of ܦܠܸܫܬ (plišt).
