Etymology

Ultimately derived from Ancient Greek φιάλη (phiálē). Either inherited from Aramaic פִּילָסָא (pīlāsā, saucer) or possibly from ܦܝܠܐܣ (p̄īyālas), the irregular plural form of ܦܝܵܠܵܐ (pyālā, broad shallow dish; bowl, saucer) as seen in Classical Syriac. Doublet of ܦܵܠܵܐ (pālā).
