[edit]Ultimately derived from Ancient Greek φιάλη (phiálē). Either inherited from Aramaic פִּילָסָא (pīlāsā, “saucer”) or possibly from ܦܝܠܐܣ (p̄īyālas), the irregular plural form of ܦܝܵܠܵܐ (pyālā, “broad shallow dish; bowl, saucer”) as seen in Classical Syriac. Doublet of ܦܵܠܵܐ (pālā).
