Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac reinterpreted as “penguin” as a semantic loan from Arabic بِطْرِيق, from Aramaic פַּטְּרִיקָא (paṭrīqā), from Ancient Greek πατρίκιος (patríkios, patrician), from Latin pātricius.
