From a colloquial expression in Arabic عَلَى الأَسَاس (ʕalā al-ʔasās, literally “on the foundation”).

1. (slang) supposedly, as if

   ܗܲܡܙܘܼܡܹܐ ܝܗ݇ܘܵܐ ܡܸܢܝܼ ܐܲܝܟ݂ ܕܥܲܠܐܲܣܵܣ ܟܸܡ ܡܲܡܪܥܸܢܹܗ.

   hamzūmē ìwā minī ayḵ d-ˁalˀassās kim mamrˁinnēh.

   He was speaking to me as if I hurt him.

   ܥܲܠܐܲܣܵܣ ܐܲܢ݇ܬ ܟܸܡ ܦܲܠܛܸܬ ܠܹܗ ܙܸܒܠܵܐ ܬܸܡܵܠ ܒܠܲܝܠܹܐ!

   ˁalˀassās at kim palṭit lēh ziblā timmāl b-laylē!

   Supposedly you took out the trash last night!

Usage notes

• While this is an adverb, it is also used as an adjective, stressed when followed by the noun. Translated as “so-called”, “supposed”, or “alleged” (someone or something that is meant to have a certain characteristic but doesn't in reality)

  ܚܲܒ݂ܪܝܼ ܥܲܠܐܲܣܵܣ، ܟܸܡ ܫܵܒ݂ܹܩ ܠܝܼ ܒܓܹܒܵܐ ܕܐܘܼܪܚܵܐ.

  ḥaḇrī ˁalˀassās, kim šāḇēq lī b-gēbā d-urḥā.

  My so-called friend, abandoned me at the side of the road.
