Borrowed from Arabic عُلَب (ʕulab), the collective plural of عُلْبَة (ʕulba), possibly related to Akkadian 𒀀𒆷𒈪𒌅 (a-la-mi-tu /⁠alamittu, elamittu, alabattu⁠/, a kind of palm-tree) from which such a box would have been made.
