Classical Syriac
[edit]Alternative forms
[edit]- ܣܢܕܝܢܐ (senḏyānā)
Etymology
[edit]Possibly from the Middle Persian ancestor of Persian سندیان (sendiyân, “kind of oak”), potentially related to the term behind ܣܕܢܐ (saddānā, “anvil”), otherwise from the Semitic root ܣ-ܢ-ܕ (s-n-d) related to firmness and staying up. Compare Arabic سِندِيَان (sindiyān), Akkadian 𒄑𒋛𒅔𒁕𒀀 (sindu, “a tree”).
