Inherited from Aramaic נְחָשָׁא (nḥāšā), itself from Proto-Semitic *naḥaš- (“snake, reptile; divination, incantations; to learn secret things”) but uncertain; compare Arabic نُحَاس (nuḥās) and Hebrew נְחֹשֶׁת (n'khóshet). The latter noun is derived from the former as is Arabic نَحَّاس (naḥḥās).
