Derived from the active participle of ܡܬܲܪܓܸܡ (mtargim, “to translate, interpret”) + -ܢܐ (-ānā, the occupational ending); compare Classical Syriac ܬܪܓܡܢܐ (targmānā), Akkadian 𒅴𒁄 (targumannum), Arabic مُتَرْجِم (mutarjim) and Hebrew מְתַרְגֵּם (metargém).
