[edit]From the verb ܫܲܠܸܛ (šalliṭ, “to rule, control”) + -ܢܐ (-ānā, the adjectival ending), with the sense of “remote control” nominalised from ܡܫܲܠܛܘܼܬܵܐ ܡܪܸܚܩܵܐ (mšalṭūtā mriḥqā, literally “control from distance”).
