From the verb ܫܲܠܸܛ (šalliṭ, to rule, control) +‎ -ܢܐ (-ānā, the adjectival ending), with the sense of “remote control” nominalised from ܡܫܲܠܛܘܼܬܵܐ ܡܪܸܚܩܵܐ (mšalṭūtā mriḥqā, literally control from distance).
