Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Ancient Greek μέσπιλον (méspilon, medlar); compare Ottoman Turkish مشمله (muşmula), Greek μούσμουλο (moúsmoulo) and Arabic مُشْمُلة (mušmula).
