Etymology

[edit]

Probably from Univerbation of ܡܘܿ () +‎ ܡܸܢܕܝܼ (mindī), literally What [is this] thing?, compare the alternative form ܡܵܕܝܼ (mādī) formed with ܡܵܐ () rather than ܡܘܿ (). Also often used in some dialects is ܡܸܢܕܝܼ ܡܵܐ (mā mindī, literally What thing?). Also proposed is Univerbation of ܡܘܿ () +‎ ܐܵܕܝܼ (ādī), literally What is this?.[1]
