From an older form *ܐܵܦܹܐ (*ˀāpē) with a shift from the an /ʔ/ to /j/, from Aramaic אֲפָא (ʿăp̄ā); compare Classical Syriac ܐܦܐ, Hebrew אָפָה (afá) and Akkadian 𒂊𒁍𒌝 (epûm).
