Uncertain. Possibilities include:

  • Cognate with ܛܘܪܐ (ṭūrāʾ, mountain), possibly from the root ܛ-ܪ-ܪ (ṭ-r-r). Compare Hebrew צֹר (ṣōr).
  • From *ܛܪܪܐ (ṭarrārāʾ), through dissimilation of r.
