Inherited from Aramaic טֻפְרָא (ṭuprā), from Proto-Semitic *θ̣upr-; compare Classical Syriac ܛܦܪܐ (ṭep̄rā), Arabic ظُفْر (ẓufr), Akkadian 𒌢 (ṣuprum), Hebrew צִפֹּרֶן (tsipóren) and Israeli Hebrew טֹפֶר (tófer). The senses “onycha” and “onyx” are semantic loans of Ancient Greek ὄνυξ (ónux)
