Probably from an earlier uncontracted form ܚܪܨܐ (ḥarṣā). Compare Hebrew חֲלָצַיִם (ḥălāṣáyim).

The plural ܚܲܨܹ̈ܐ (ḥaṣṣē) is used for the backs of humans while the plural ܚܲܨܵܢܹ̈ܐ (ḥaṣṣānē) is used for the backs of animals.
