[edit]From Aramaic חַמוּצָא (ḥamuṣā); cognate to Hebrew חָמוּץ (khamútz) and Arabic حَامِض (ḥāmiḍ). Doublet of ܚܲܡܝܼܥܵܐ (ḥamīˁā, “leavened”). Of the adjective pattern 1a22ū3ā.
