[edit]From ܚܝܛܐ (ħayyāṭā, “tailor”), from the root ܚ-ܘ-ܛ (ḥ-w-ṭ) related to sewing + the abstract noun ending -ܘܬܐ (-ūṯā). Compare Arabic خِيَاطَة (ḵiyāṭa) and Hebrew חַיָּטוּת (ħayyāṭûṯ).
