ܙܘܦܐ

From Wiktionary, the free dictionary

Classical Syriac

[edit]

Etymology 1

[edit]

Related to Akkadian 𒍪𒌑𒁍 (/zūpu/), Hebrew אֵזוֹב (ʾēzṓḇ), Jewish Palestinian Aramaic אֵיזוֹבָא (ʾēzōḇa), and Ancient Greek ὕσσωπος (hússōpos) with its many European descendants.

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • (Classical Edessan) IPA(key): [ˈzo.p˭ɑ]
  • (Eastern Syriac) IPA(key): [ˈzo.p˭ɑ]
  • (Western Syriac) IPA(key): [ˈzu.p˭o]

The unaspirated [p˭], foreign to Syriac phonology, is due to there being a Greek π (p) being rendered in the other word, so that the two words spelled the same got fused in pronunciation, both being considered of Greek origin by Syrians.
