From originally a plural formation of Aramaic דְּרָעָא (dərāʿāʾ, upper arm), from Proto-Semitic *ḏirāʕ- (arm); compare also Classical Syriac ܕܪܥܐ (dərāʿāʾ), Arabic ذِرَاع (ḏirāʕ) and Hebrew זְרוֹעַ (z'róa').
