[edit]From originally a plural formation of Aramaic דְּרָעָא (dərāʿāʾ, “upper arm”), from Proto-Semitic *ḏirāʕ- (“arm”); compare also Classical Syriac ܕܪܥܐ (dərāʿāʾ), Arabic ذِرَاع (ḏirāʕ) and Hebrew זְרוֹעַ (z'róa').
