Dissimilated from older Aramaic *ܓܫܓܝܫܬܐ (gašgīštā), from the root ܓ-ܫ-ܓ-ܫ (ɡ-š-ɡ-š), related to feeling; compare Mishnaic Hebrew גַּרְגֵּשׁ (gargēš).
