Etymology 1

From the root ܓ-ܕ-ܡ (ɡ-d-m) related to cutting off; compare Hebrew גִּזּוּם (gizzûm), Hebrew גדם (gedem). The sense of "apocope" is a calque of Arabic جَزْم (jazm).
