From the earlier uncontracted form ܓܪܓܪܬܐ (gargartā), from the root ܓ ܪ ܓ ܪ related to dragging or leaking. Compare Arabic حَنْجَرَة (ḥanjara) and Hebrew גַּרְגֶּרֶת (gargéreṯ).
