From the root ܐ-ܠ-ܡ (ʾ-l-m) related to being angry; compare Arabic أَلِم (ʔalim, pain, grief, irritation), Hebrew אַלִּים (ʾallîm, violent).

  • (Western Syriac) IPA(key): [ˈʔɛl.mo]

Based on regular sound changes, the Eastern pronunciation differs from the expected *[ˈʔɪl.mɑ].
