Probably from ܚܪܹܐ (ḥrē), re-analyzed as a plural form, originally the absolute form of Aramaic [script needed] (ḥeryā, “excrement”). Ultimately from Proto-West Semitic *ḫarʔ-; compare Classical Syriac ܚܸܪܝܵܐ (ḥeryā).
