[edit]Inherited from Aramaic אַבּוּבָא (ʾabbūḇā), from Akkadian 𒄀𒁍 (ebbūbum, “flute”); compare Arabic أُنْبُوب (ʔunbūb) and Hebrew אַבּוּב (abúv). The sense of “oboe” is a phono-semantic matching from English.
