Etymology
[edit]A derivation from Proto-Turkic *yap- (“to cover, close”). Related to dialectal Turkish yapıncak. Compare also Old East Slavic япончица (japončica), япанча (japanča), whence Russian епанча́ (jepančá), епа́нча (jepánča), опонча́ (opončá), опо́нча (opónča), Ukrainian опанча́ (opančá), опонча́ (opončá), Belarusian апанча (apanča), Old Belarusian епонча (eponča), епанча (epanča), опонча (oponča), опанча (opanča).
