[edit]This city was previously known as یالاق آباد (yalak âbâd), from یالاق (yalak, “trough”) + آباد (âbâd, “prosperous”). The current name appeared only in the 18ᵗʰ century and is assumed to be a contraction of یالی (yalı, “shore, strand, beach”) and اوا (ova, “plain, lowland”).
