Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yạŕtuk (“pillow”); cognate with Azerbaijani yastıq, Bashkir яҫтыҡ (yaśtıq), Chuvash ҫытар (śyt̬ar), Kazakh жастық (jastyq), Kyrgyz жаздык (jazdık), Turkmen ýassyk, Uyghur ياستۇق (yastuq), Uzbek yostiq and Yakut сыттык (sıttık).

1. pad, cushion, bolster, a flattened mass of anything soft, like wool, used to sit or lie on

   Synonym: مندر (minder)

2. pillow, a soft cushion used to support the head and neck in bed while sleeping

   Synonym: بالش (baliş)

3. fender, any cushion-like object placed along the sides of a boat to prevent damage

   Synonym: اوستورماچه (usturmaça)

4. (agriculture) seedbed, the local soil environment in which seeds are planted and grown
