Inherited from Prakrit 𑀓𑀼𑀁𑀘𑀺𑀬𑀸 (kuṃciyā), from Sanskrit कुञ्चिका (kuñcikā). Cognate with Gujarati કૂંચી (kū̃cī), Kachchi કૂંજી (kūñjī), Kashmiri کُنٛزकुंज़ (kunz), Odia କୁଞ୍ଚି (kuñci), Punjabi کُن٘جِیਕੁੰਜੀ (kuṉjī), and Saraiki کنجی (kuṉjī).
