Inherited from Prakrit 𑀲𑀡𑀺𑀘𑁆𑀙𑀭 (saṇicchara​), from Sanskrit *शनैश्चर (śanaiścara, slow-moving; Saturn). Cognate with Punjabi چَھنِچَّھر / ਛਨਿੱਛਰ (chanicchar) and Urdu سَنِیچَر (sanīcar).
