[edit]Borrowed from Classical Persian پنجاب (panjāb) or Sanskrit पञ्च (pañca) + आप (āpa)- five waters, five rivers, referring to the five great rivers of the Punjab- Ravi, Satluj, Beas, Jhelum and Chenab. Compare Hindustani پنجاب / पंजाब (pañjāb).
