Etymology

[edit]

Akin to Parthian 𐭐‎𐭕𐭉𐭊𐭅𐭎‎𐭐𐭍 (p‎tykws‎pn /pāδgōspān/) in the ŠKZ inscription. The Middle Persian counterpart is damaged in the inscription, but has been reconstructed as *𐭯𐭠𐭲𐭪𐭥𐭮𐭯‎𐭠𐭭 (pʾtkwsp‎ʾn /pāygōsbān/), from [Book Pahlavi needed] (pʾtkws /pāygōs/, district, province) +‎ [Book Pahlavi needed] (-pʾn' /-bān/, -keeper, -guard). Old Armenian պատգոսապան (patgosapan), պատգոս (patgos) and Arabic فَاذُوسْبَان (fāḏūsbān) are borrowed from Iranian.
