[edit]From Middle Persian wʾnyst, wʾn- (wānist, wān-, “to conquer”), from Proto-Iranian *wan- (“to triumph, win”), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *wan-, from Proto-Indo-European *wenh₁-. Cognate with Avestan 𐬬𐬀𐬥- (van-, “to win, triumph, to overcome”), Sanskrit वन् (van), English win.
