Etymology

Apparently denominal from هَيْئَة (hayʔa), compare طَرْز (ṭarz) for an equal development. The Dictionnaire du faisceau dialectal arabe andalou suggests an Old South Arabian borrowing, in view of Sabaean 𐩠𐩺𐩲 (hyʿ /⁠hayaʿa⁠/, “to flow, to run; to extend (boundary); to carry out, to implement or accomplish (construction)”), which is indeed with a voiced pharyngeal fricative instead of a voiceless glottal plosive here and in derivations, and possibly related to ش ي ع (š-y-ʕ) related to spreading.
