[edit]From Aramaic הּנְדְּבָא / ܗܶܢܕܒܳܐ (hendǝḇā), cognate to Arabic هَدَب (hadab, “twisted leaves or sprigs; cilium”). From Semitic also Byzantine Greek ἔντυβον (éntubon), whence reborrowed Classical Syriac ܐܢܛܘܒܝܐ (anṭūbiyā, “endive, dandelion, chicory”) and the European terms Late Latin intibus, English endive etc.
