Ultimately from Akkadian 𒌷𒉌𒉡𒀀 𒀏 (Ninua) and Old Babylonian 𒌷𒉌𒉡𒀀 (Ninuwā, House of Fish), although the intended sense or religious application of "fish" is unclear.
