Etymology

Compound of نو (nev, new) +‎ شهر (şehir, city), a calque of Byzantine Greek Νεάπολις (Neápolis), the ancient name of the city. After the conquest of the Ottomans, the place was renamed مشغره (muşgara), perhaps from Greek μοσχάρι (moschári, calf).
