- mourning, lamentation, wailing
- c. 1260s, Jalāl ad-Dīn Mohammad Rūmī, translated by Reynold A. Nicholson, مثنوی معنوی [Masnavi-ye-Ma'navi], volume I, verse 2543:
- ناله از اجزای ایشان میشنید
نوحه پیدا نوحه گویان ناپدید- nāla az ajzā-yi ēšān mē-šinīd
nawha paydā nawha gōyān nā-padīd - He heard wailing from their limbs:
the lamentation was plain, those who uttered it (were) invisible.
